Complaints all the time about our roads: Mohammad Fayyaz

Mohammad FayyazSince this article was written, the work on the brick pavers which Mohammad Fayyaz has been campaigning for, has been done.

Brick pavers

I hear complaints all the time about the state of our roads here in Chesham: the lack of drain maintenance causing floods, the potholes, the streetlights not working and so on.

The neglect has been going on for so long that there is a huge backlog of work needing to be carried out.

Hivings Hill, near to where I live, now floods again in the dip near the junction with Hillside every time there is really heavy rain.

Major work, costing lots of money, has been done there over the years, but once the work has been done, it always gets forgotten about until the flooding comes back.

Anyone who cares to look can see that most of the drains uphill from where the flooding occurs are completely blocked, and the expensively-drilled boreholes below ground must be blocked too. Regular maintenance could be cheaper in the long run.

The brick pavers in the town centre are another ongoing story. They grew very uneven over the years and some were replaced with patches of tarmac after the road needed to be dug up for some reason.

Finally, three or four years ago, the county council replaced the pavers, which must have cost a bomb. But it wasn't long before some roadworks were necessary in the Broadway; the pavers were dug up and afterwards replaced with more patches of tarmac.

I was told at the time that the tarmac was just a temporary repair and the brick pavers would be brought back when the ground had settled. That was more than a year ago and the tarmac patches are still there making the place look scruffy and uncared for.

Let's hope the new Buckinghamshire Council will manage things better and come up with proper schedules of maintenance. At the moment, highways work is all outsourced to Transport for Buckinghamshire (TfB) which is actually a private company which sub-contracts to many other compaines.

The contract is up for renewal in the next couple of years, so Buckinghamshire Council needs to try to make sure we all get better value for money.
