Unitary Council is Tories’ Gravy Train

Your money will finance the new unitary council for Buckinghamshire which is going to have 147 members. That's more than it takes to run the Scottish Parliament (129). Many more than the number of Assembly Members to run Wales (60). More even than it takes to run Birmingham, usually thought of as Britain's largest council (101).

Liberal Democrats believe that 147 is far too many councillors. Rather than having lots of backbenchers at County Hall looking for something to do, we would rather the extra effort and money was used by local Parish and Town councils.

Why so many? Simple - because the local Conservative parties think all the 147 are going to be Conservatives. Electing three members per large county ward is a bias towards the Conservatives. Of course, they're not doing it for the money, but assuming they all get an allowance of £13,000, then with expenses that's up to £1,500.000 of YOUR MONEY.

The Electoral Commission for Local Government in England will be recommending new electoral arrangements for the new authority in the next couple of years. A big majority is equal to zero accountability so without opposition, you will continue to be taken for granted and nothing will change. To save waste and not services Vote Liberal Democrat in May 2020.
