20% of Children in Chesham and Amersham, Living in Poverty. Liberal Democrat Candidate Calls for Change in Approach

December 6, 2019 10:14 AM

Dan Gallagher, Liberal Democrat candidate for Chesham and Amersham, called for a change in the approach to poverty in the constituency at a meeting with sixth formers at Dr Challoner's Grammar School, Amersham yesterday.

"According to the Children's Society 20%, one in five, of the children in our constituency are living in poverty. This is simply unacceptable. We are a wealthy constituency - 77% of us own our own home[1], which is considerably higher than the national average of 65%[2]. Yet we have three food banks and a toy bank every Christmas in Chesham.

"Of course, these charitable efforts should be applauded but it's time for us to make a change and ensure that no one in the constituency is reliant on food banks. Another five years of a Tory Government is not the answer.

"The Liberal Democrats will build a fairer economy by providing free childcare from nine months and giving every adult £10,000 to spend on skills and training throughout their lives. Plus, give every child the best start in life by recruiting 20,000 more teachers as part of an extra £10 billion a year for schools."
