At a packed hustings on Saturday, Dan Gallagher was selected from four hopefuls as the parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Democrats in the Chesham and Amersham constituency.

The local businessman, who has lived in the area for 17 years, vowed to "make history and put right wing Tories out."

In his powerful hustings speech, he said his strength was being able to appeal to traditional Conservative voters who think there is no other option.

"I can reach out to all voters, but I'll be frank: especially moderate Remainer Conservative voters. I'm speaking of my neighbours, of instinctive Conservatives and, to be honest, my family."

"I hope to be out there, to meet voters, whether they have previously been Labour or Conservative voters and ask them to vote for the Liberal Democrats."

"We are the solid, hard centre of British politics and it is the centre that should overcome, for the centre is sensible."

"I will work to win and I believe we will break the Conservative grip on our district, our country, and our lives. And then we will carry that campaign on to the county elections next year."

In a wide-ranging, impassioned speech, he also touched on the environment, "the most important issue that faces us," and Brexit, which he said "diminishes and threatens the unity and all that is good about our great country."

The Chiltern Liberal Democrats are seeing a surge of new members, which mirrors the wider national surge as opposition MPs cross the floor to join the party. Membership has more than quadrupled since 2015.

In the European elections, the Liberal Democrats topped the poll in the Chiltern District, ahead of the Brexit Party, the Conservatives and Labour.

Chair of the Chiltern Liberal Democrats, Walid Marzouk warmly thanked everyone who made it to the hustings, valued their participation and said:

"Chesham and Amersham is a Remainer constituency and will not vote again for an out and out Brexiteer."

"It was the Lib Dems who called for a 2nd Referendum and guess what … we are about to have it dressed up as a General Election. They can call it what they want - Bring it On!"
