Local Liberal Democrats to be involved in election of new Leader

June 26, 2017 5:03 PM

Following Tim Farron's decision to stand down as Leader of the Liberal Democrats, there will be an election for a new Leader, who will take office in time for the Party's Autumn Conference.

Scottish MP Jo Swinson - who gained Dunbartonshire East from the SNP with a majority of more than 5,000 - has been elected as Deputy Leader.

All members will get the opportunity to vote in the Leadership election either through the post or by choosing an online option.

To ensure that members will have the opportunity to meet and question the Leadership candidates, and participate in the debate, a series of hustings will be organised around the country. They will include online hustings, details of which will be publicised in due course.

All the information about the Leadership contest including the dates and venues of the hustings will shortly appear on the party's website:

Any individual who joins the party before the close of nominations can vote in the election. We encourage local supporters and friends to join our party. The easiest way to join is online at

The timetable for the election is as follows:

Opening of nominations 25 June 2017
Closing of nominations 20 July 2017
Dispatch of ballot papers 16 Aug 2017
Deadline for ballot papers to be returned 11 Sep 2017
Count and declaration of the winner 13 Sep 2017
