Members of the Chiltern District Council Planning Committee voted to defer a decision on the new leisure centre in Amersham, aka the 'Lifestyle Centre'. The plans were not approved when seven members voted against compared with only four in favour.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Peter Jones said "I was proud of the committee, we treated the Council independently as we should treat any other applicant. I am convinced that we would not have approved these plans had they been submitted by a commercial operator. The simple fact is that the plans showed less parking than there is now, despite that the new centre is supposed to attract more customers.

It seems as if the long-delayed (but eagerly awaited?) local plan for Chiltern and South Bucks may be published this Spring. Councillors on Chiltern DC (CDC) are due to review the draft in late March. After that the plan will again be put out to public consultation.

We don't know for sure what will be in the new plan. Two items to look for will be:

Liberal Democrats on Chesham Town Council are monitoring closely how the Tories, who have run the Council since 2015, are spending the Council's reserves and have nothing much to show for it. Early in 2018, Alan Bacon and Mohammad Fayyaz put down a motion: "This Council notes the very large drawdown of the reserves forecast in this financial year and will work to keep budgets on track in the coming year." You wouldn't have thought that was too controversial but the Tories all voted it down and continued happily spending the reserves, mainly on consultant fees.

    <----The new hoardings

Thank you to Paradigm Housing for replacing the hoardings on the large development site in Asheridge Road, which they now own. We reported in the September Focus that Liberal Democrat councillors Alan Bacon and Mohammad Fayyaz had asked Paradigm to improve the appearance of the site because the blocked- up entrances were an eyesore. It does now look better with new hoardings. We are all waiting to see exactly what Paradigm plan to do with the site. They have said that they will be submitting a new planning application.
