Local Government in Chesham and AmershamLocal services within our constituency are provided by three levels of local government - Buckinghamshire County Council, Chiltern District Council, and 17 town and parish councils, including the newly formed Little Chalfont Parish Council - with Liberal Democrat Councillors playing an important role at all three levels.
Buckinghamshire County Council manages strategic planning issues, highways, social services, education and refuse and waste disposal sites along with local services such as libraries and museums. Since the local boundary changes earlier in 2007, the Chesham and Amersham parliamentary constituency has mirrored the area of Chiltern District Council. The district council is responsible for the more regulatory services such as town planning, environmental health and building control. They also manage housing, often in conjunction with Housing Associations, benefits, the collection of council tax and the collection of refuse and waste. Parish or Town Councils are the most local level of government in England. They are independent of other levels of local government, ie. District and County Council, however they maintain a close working relationship with both. The powers of Parishes vary depending on how large and how active they are. Some meet infrequently (but at least four times a year, including one public meeting) and are responsible for very few matters. Other, larger, parishes undertake many duties such as street lighting, managing cemeteries, allotments, commons, village halls, war memorials and markets etc. There are two Town Councils, Amersham and Chesham and 15 Parish Councils within the constituency. At all levels of local government the services provided can be divided into two categories - services that are obligatory under law and those which the Council provides in response to the needs and wishes of local residents.
