'Fix Our Broken Politics' - A Public Meeting on Friday 16th October.3.19.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 6th Oct 2009 Chiltern Liberal Democrats are holding a meeting open to everyone next Friday, October 16th. The meeting will at Dr Challoner's Grammar School in Amersham, starting at 8.00pm.The keynote speaker will be Peter Facey, director of "Unlock Democracy". Peter Facey is the founding Director of "Unlock Democracy". He is recognised as an expert in democratic reform and comments widely in the UK media. In the last two years he has given evidence to parliamentary committees on issues as diverse as devolution and decentralisation, lobbying and war powers. He has established "Unlock Democracy" as the leading provider of interactive citizenship conferences for 16-19 year olds . He has a particular interest in elections and how get more people involved in the political process. He was a member of the Independent Commission on Voting Methods which reported in 2002 and looked into internet, postal and electronic voting. "Unlock Democracy" is the successor organisation to Charter 88. It campaigns for democracy, rights and freedoms. A grassroots movement, it is owned and run by its members. In particular, it campaigns for: Fair, Open and Honest Elections; Rights, Freedoms and a Written Constitution; Stronger Parliament and Accountable Government; Bringing Power Closer to the People; A Culture of Informed Political Interest and Responsibility. Tim Starkey, Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for Chesham & Amersham, says "we are very pleased to be putting on this event. There is a lot of talk about 'cleaning up politics' and restoring faith in our parliament and politicians. The meeting is open to all, including members of any party and none."
