Chiltern Lib Dems Slam Tory Cuts to School Travel Safety Budget

12.05.52am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 19th Jul 2008

Chiltern Lib Dems have slammed Tory Bucks County Council over its recent cuts to essential child road safety spending in and around schools. £250,000 is being cut from the budget at a time when parents are crying out for more to be done to improve walk to school routes and their children's pedestrian and cycling safety.

The recently published "Travel Choice Team News" from Bucks County Council, confirmed the scale of the cuts and made it clear that this would "restrict the schemes we can do on the ground."

Chiltern Liberal Democrats Parliamentary Spokesman Tim Starkey said "£250,000 of cuts means less money for urgent and essential school road safety improvements. Parents will wonder how it is that a Conservative Council which is quick to tell them to walk their children to school, can justify such a swingeing cut in essential road safety measures."
