Conservative Broken Promises on Weekly Rubbish Collection

Written by Brenda Barker & Seb Berry and published in Letter published in Bucks Examiner 8th May 2008 on Wed 7th May 2008

Dear Editor,

Your front page story ("Bi-weekly rubbish collection looming") raises the prospect again of the Conservative District Council ending weekly rubbish collection across the whole district including Great Missenden, Prestwood and Heath End by 2011 at the latest. 2011 is the year of the next District Council elections. Yet barely 12 months ago on the last District Council Election day we watched with incredulity as Conservative candidates stood outside the polling station in Prestwood to assure voters that the weekly collection was safe in their hands.

This was doubly surprising given the crystal clear public commitment of the Conservative Council prior to the 2007 election to extend fortnightly collection beyond Amersham, Chesham Bois and the Chalfonts to the whole District and the total silence of Conservative candidates in Great Missenden, Prestwood and Heath End on this issue in their official campaign literature. But since those clear promises by sitting Conservative councillors were made to voters just about to enter a polling station, we will be watching very closely to see how precisely they and their colleagues on the Conservative led council now "square the circle" on this issue.

Yours Sincerely

Brenda Barker
