Dear Editor - Environment needs protection from John Prescott

Dear Editor, I couldn't agree more with Great Missenden's newly elected Councillor Bob Swayne when he says that our local environment "needs protecting from John Prescott." (BFP 27 Oct).

Specifically, the need to resist inappropriate and unrealistic local housing targets is something on which both our parties can agree. But protecting and enhancing the local environment is about a lot more than scoring points at John Prescott's expense. Great Missenden and Prestwood for example are still crying out for a proper co-ordinated County and District council strategy to improve road safety, particularly for the most vulnerable members of the community. There are a great many common-sense proposals now on the table as a result of Parish Council and wider community involvement in the County Council's 2005 A4128 route survey, but to date, hardly any are being implemented. It is now time for the Conservative County and District councils to deliver on their many road and pedestrian safety promises made to voters during the 2005 and 2006 local elections. The Chiltern District council elections in May 2007 will be a good first test of progress made.

Yours sincerely,

Seb Berry
